Department for Promotion of Industries and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, launched a Scheme for Pedagogy & Research in IPRs for Holistic Education & Academia (SPRIHA) in the year 2016 under which IPR Chairs have been set up in select universities.
This was in accordance with National IPR Policy 2016, which proclaims as one of the objectives: "Strengthen IP Chairs in educational institutes of higher learning to provide quality teaching and research."
MNLU Mumbai has been selected by the DPIIT as one of the 12 universities/organizations in the country for setting up IPR Chairs.
DPIIT appointed Dr. W. M. Dhumane, Former Senior Joint Controller of Patents and Designs as IPR Chair Professor with effect from 10th June 2020.
The objectives for creation of IPR Chairs under SPRIHA are to encourage the study of, education in and research on Intellectual Property Rights, as well as to promote outreach in IPRs:
She has an overall experience of twenty five years in both academia and practice in the field of IPR. She obtained her LLM from erstwhile Pune University, specialising in Intellectual Property Rights.
Her career began as a lecturer at NBT Law College in Nashik. After 7 years in Academia, she moved to Practice. She worked as Examiner of Trademarks at Mumbai and qualified the Indian Patent Agent Exam. She headed the filing department at "Krishna & Saurastri Associates".
For the past ten years she has built a clientele of MSMEs, Students, Institutes, Industry etc., assisting in securing Patents, Designs, Trademarks and Copyrights. She is empanelled as an IP facilitator with the DPIIT under the SIPP scheme of the Govt. of India.
